Protect Your Identity
Do you know how to protect your personal information and identity? The LVMPD Financial Crimes Section offers the following rules to help you avoid Identity Theft.
1. Check your health/insurance providers policy as to how it tracks your personal information/identifiers. A large number of Identity Thefts can be attributed to mail interception/theft where the victim's personal information was obtained directly from several medical bills.
2. Contact at least one credit reporting agency every six months to obtain a credit report. Carefully go over each entry to see if any inquiries were made to your credit that were not authorized by you. Look for any collections on your credit report that do not belong to you. Be absolutely certain it was not just a bill you forgot about paying before you report a suspicious collection to the credit reporting agency and the Police.
3. If you live outside of Clark County, Nevada, and are a victim of Identity Theft where the suspect may be from Clark County, you first must file a report with your local police department to verify your identity. Once that paperwork has been completed, your police department can forward it to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department or you can mail or fax it yourself. When you file a police report, be sure that you also contact the credit reporting agencies to set up a fraud alert on your account.
