Traffic

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Traffic Bureau is responsible for the administration and enforcement of traffic regulations and ordinances governed by the City of Las Vegas, Clark County and the State of Nevada. The primary functions of the Traffic Bureau include enforcement, educational activities directed toward reducing accidents and the performance of general and technical accident investigations. The Traffic Bureau is also the Department's liaison with the Regional Traffic Safety Commission and provides data-sharing and recommendations to the City, County and State Traffic Engineers.

The Traffic Bureau is divided into two sections:

Traffic Section, which consists of Field Squads / PSU, which investigate traffic accidents and conduct traffic enforcement; TARGET DUI, which compiles and prepares submittals for prosecution on all DUI arrests; The Accident Investigation Detail, which consists of both the Hit&Run and the Fatal teams; and The Training Unit Detail, which is responsible for new and recurrent training for the officers assigned to the Traffic Bureau.

Community Services Section, which trains, coordinates and supervises elementary school crossing guards. The Community Service Bureau currently employs over 400 crossing guards and provides crossings for 150 schools in Clark County.

Traffic congestion in our urban environment and the ability of the motorcycle to maneuver in traffic is the primary reason it is used as a law enforcement vehicle. The motorcycle has been used by police agencies since 1870 and is the primary mode of transportation for the LVMPD Traffic Bureau.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Traffic Bureau operates one of the safest and best trained police motorcycle fleets in the United States. The bureau consists of 150 officers, of which, 144 are certified as Motorcycle officers. Every Police Motorcycle Officer/Supervisor must pass a rigorous 120 hour motorcycle academy and must be re-certified every six (6) months.

Motor vehicle accidents cause more death, injury, and economic loss than any other violation or crime. Uniform enforcement supports the ultimate aim of traffic law enforcement, that is, to achieve voluntary compliance with traffic laws and regulations. Enforcement techniques are based on accident data, enforcement activity records, traffic volume, and traffic conditions. The LVMPD Traffic Bureau is constantly exploring and implementing new and innovative methods to improve traffic safety and decrease serious injury / fatal accidents.
