BACKGROUND
Sheriff Gillespie is originally from a small town in upstate New York not far from Poughkeepsie.
LAW ENFORCEMENT HISTORY
Sheriff Doug Gillespie has been a member of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department since 1980. During his tenure as an officer, he has worked in a variety of assignments such as Patrol, Field Training, SWAT, K-9, Special Events, and the Academy. In January 1998 he was promoted to captain and assigned to the Southeast Area Command where he served until January 2000. In January 2000 he was assigned to the Vice Narcotics Bureau. On August 19, 2000, he was promoted to Commander of the Central District, which includes Southeast Area Command, Downtown Area Command, the Traffic Safety Bureau (Traffic Bureau and McCarran Airport). He was promoted to Deputy Chief in June 2002 and used to oversee the operations of the Detention Services Division, which includes the Clark County Detention Center.
EDUCATION
- In May 1980 he graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York, with a bachelor's of science degree in Criminal Justice. Later that same year, he moved to Las Vegas.
- He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, September 2001.
