Please carefully review the information listed below. These specific guidelines are provided in an effort to assist you with your decision concerning whether it is beneficial to submit your application for employment to our Department. Please be advised that the information listed below does not constitute all applicable hiring standards of this Department; the majority of our standards are confidential and are not available for applicants or current employees to view.

All applicants must  be a high school graduate or possess a G.E.D. (General Educational Development) certificate.   This requirement must be met at the time of application.   All other entry level requirements are measured through the selection process.

  1. You will not be eligible for employment with the LVMPD if:

    You have been convicted of:

    1. A felony crime, or a crime for which you would be required to register per Nevada law
    2. Two (2) DWI's,
    3. Domestic Violence or Domestic Assault (any position which may require carrying a firearm)

    All other convictions will be reviewed and may be disqualifying .

  2. You will be asked about your use of illegal drugs and drug sales.

  3. Other areas of concern include, but are not limited to, the categories listed below:
    1. Employment history
    2. Military history
    3. Driving history
    4. Financial history
    5. Criminal history/Involvement
    6. Truthfulness/Character issues
    7. Tattoos, branding/jewelry which are exposed or visible while on duty.

  4. You will be questioned by a Background Investigator and may be required to pass a polygraph examination on all of the above areas. You may also be required to take a psychological examination.

  5. Applicants applying for non-commissioned positions must also meet the following requirements:
    1. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
    2. Applicants must be citizens/naturalized citizens or permanent resident aliens without conditions on status of the United States of America by the date of the first test instrument for the position applied.

  6. Applicants applying for commissioned positions(Police Recruit or Corrections Recruit) must also meet the following requirements:
    1. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age.
    2. Visual acuity must be 20/20, or correctable to 20/20, with normal color, peripheral, and night vision. For applicants who wear hard lenses or who have worn soft lenses for less than 6 months, uncorrected far vision can be no worse than 20/40. Different standards apply to those who have worn soft lenses for over 6 months, and these can be obtained by contacting the Health and Safety Unit. Visual requirements also vary based on position for which applicant applies.
    3. Applicants must be citizens of the United States of America.
    4. Applicants must have the dexterity to fire a handgun; strength to subdue persons; stamina to sit, stand, or walk for long periods of time; and the tolerance to work under adverse conditions.
