The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is committed to supporting efforts to reduce the number of traffic-related injuries and death to school-age youth. Our Traffic Section has produced a 10-minute educational video, “In the Blink of an Eye,” that sends a strong message to young drivers about the dangers they may face on the road. This tape includes actual 911 recordings and accident-scene videotape footage from a May 2002 accident that claimed the lives of two of our area teens and left three others critically injured. The tape also includes interviews with one of the most critically injured teens, the mother of another, classmates, and emergency services personnel.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for young people 15-20 years of age. Why do young drivers have such poor driving performance? Three factors work together to make the teen years so deadly for young drivers: inexperience; risk-taking behavior and immaturity; and greater risk exposure.

We use this videotape in conjunction with our MOTORS -- Motor Officers Teaching Teens on Roadway Survival -- education program.

Because of an overwhelming number of requests for copies of this program, we are posting the videotapes and related materials on the web site for download and use by other law enforcement agencies and organizations that work with teen drivers. The materials are to be used only by nonprofit and not-for-profit agencies.

Because the name “Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department” and our badge have been copyrighted, we do ask that prior approval be obtained before development of any supplemental materials that might include our name and badge/logo. Thank you again for your interest. Any additional questions may be directed to the Office of Public Information at (702) 828-3394 or via email at PIO@lvmpd.com.
